Located on an overlooked site between a high-traffic arterial corridor and a quiet residential neighborhood, this project expands an existing library into a community learning center and food hall that invites all to gather. By minimizing expansion into the adjacent park, the intervention pivots the existing masonry building and its program towards the street. This re-orientation reveals spaces for communal dining, learning, and public engagement while reinforcing the building’s relationship to nearby pedestrians and vehicles as a community anchor.
As visitors circulate vertically through the building, the library’s porosity shifts from outward facing views towards upward looking spaces. Wrapped in channel glass, the building opens up to daylight from all sides and encourages visitors to look upward from a series of semi-conditioned greenhouses, gardens and courtyards that connect the interior to the sky, bringing in light, ventilation, and shared communal experience.
